Blowfly Watch
The Blowfly watch in conjunction with Elanco predicts the emergence of blowflies based on Met Office Data. This can help to predict risk of clinical cases and help treatment timings.
The recent hot weather means that the strike risk is now high throughout most parts of the UK, except upland north west England and Scotland. However, while the high temperatures have helped rapid development of the blowfly population, very dry conditions help to stop eggs hatching and the maggots developing on the sheep. So, the dry conditions will help to keep strike incidence relatively low, especially in combination with shearing. But with any rain over the next few weeks we would expect to see the numbers of strikes increase quickly. Strike management plans should be well in place.
